To be effective, ella must be taken within 5 days and levonorgestrel must be taken within 3 days after having unprotected sex.
Studies show that ella is more effective than levonorgestrel at preventing ovulation. Neither medication is 100% effective.

No. ella is not an abortion medication. Emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy, but it won't terminate an existing pregnancy. If you've had signs or symptoms of pregnancy since your last menstrual period, you'll need to confirm that you're not pregnant before you can take ella. Your clinician won't prescribe ella if you're pregnant.

No. If you've had unprotected sex and are concerned about STIs, you'll still need to see a trusted healthcare provider like a primary care physician (PCP), an urgent care clinician, or an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) for an in-person evaluation. We hope you'll find the care you need.
