What's the difference between ella and Plan B?

Ulipristal acetate (ella) and levonorgestrel (Plan B, My Way, and others) are both emergency birth control methods (morning-after pills) that may prevent pregnancy when taken as soon as possible after having unprotected sex. To be effective, ella must be taken within 5 days and levonorgestrel must be taken within 3 days after having unprotected sex.

Studies show that ella is more effective than levonorgestrel at preventing ovulation. Neither medication is 100% effective.

ella is available only by prescription and it's covered by most health insurance plans. Its out-of-pocket cost is about $40 to $50. Levonorgestrel is available over the counter at many pharmacies and online for $50 or less.

What's included

Personalized treatment plans may include a prescription for ella. You can message your online doctor or nurse practitioner with follow-up questions for 14 days after you get your treatment plan.

Based on your health information, your clinician may recommend that you see a healthcare provider in person. If that happens, you won’t be charged for your visit. Amazon Clinic doesn’t accept insurance at this time, and isn’t intended for beneficiaries of government payor programs, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Frequently asked questions

What prescription morning-after pill can I get through Amazon Clinic?
Your clinician may prescribe an emergency contraception (morning-after pill) treatment called ulipristal acetate (ella).

Please note: This information is for general reference only. Your clinician will review your symptoms and health history to determine which (if any) treatments are medically appropriate.
Will ella terminate an existing pregnancy?
No. ella is not an abortion medication. Emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy, but it won't terminate an existing pregnancy. If you've had signs or symptoms of pregnancy since your last menstrual period, you'll need to confirm that you're not pregnant before you can take ella. Your clinician won't prescribe ella if you're pregnant.

If you have questions about mifepristone, the medication that causes medical abortions, you'll need to see a trusted healthcare provider who can advise you about your options. You can't get mifepristone through Amazon Clinic.
How much does emergency contraception cost?
Ulipristal acetate (ella) is a prescription medication that's covered by most health insurance plans. Its out-of-pocket cost is about $40 to $50. Levonorgestrel (Plan B, My Way, and others) doesn't require a prescription and is available over the counter (OTC) at many pharmacies and online for $50 or less.

(Please note that pricing isn't guaranteed.)

Can emergency birth control prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
No. If you've had unprotected sex and are concerned about STIs, you'll still need to see a trusted healthcare provider like a primary care physician (PCP), an urgent care clinician, or an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) for an in-person evaluation. We hope you'll find the care you need.
Can I use ella for routine birth control?
No. Emergency birth control isn't recommended for routine use. For birth control that you can take regularly to prevent pregnancy, you can start a visit from the birth control prescription page.
Will I have to stop taking my other medications in order to take ella?
Certain medications and supplements may affect how well emergency contraception works, including the following:
• Seizure medications like phenytoin, carbamazepine, barbiturates, primidone, topiramate, or oxcarbazepine
• Rifampin (Rifadin) or daily antibiotics
• Warfarin (Jantoven, Coumadin)
• Anastrozole (Arimidex), exemestane (Aromasin), or letrozole (Femara)
• Hormone-based birth control
Your clinician will review your health information and let you know if you'll need to pause or stop other therapies before you take ella.
What types of visit can I have?
Video visits are available in all 50 states and D.C. Message-only visits are available in 34 states. To see your visit options, first choose your state.
Can I use my health insurance to pay for a visit and/or medication?
Amazon Clinic doesn't accept health insurance for visits at this time. You can submit a claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, but we can’t guarantee they’ll reimburse you.

If you normally use insurance to pay for your medications, you can do that with medications prescribed through Amazon Clinic. Amazon Pharmacy accepts most insurance plans. For other pharmacies, please talk with your pharmacy directly about insurance coverage. The cost of medication isn’t included in the cost of your visit.
