What is a sinus infection?

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis or rhinosinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses that’s caused by a virus or bacteria. When your sinuses are infected, it means that fluid has built up in the air cavities around your nasal passages. This makes it harder for your nose and sinuses to clear out dust and debris, leading to uncomfortable symptoms like facial pain or pressure.

Is this visit right for me?
This visit may be right for you if:
• You’ve had fewer than 3 sinus infections in the past 12 months

• You're not experiencing ear pain, difficulty hearing, or a heavy cough

• Your sinus infection is new and you haven’t completed a full course of antibiotics

• You’ve had symptoms for less than a month
What's the best medicine for sinusitis?
The best medicine for sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) depends on what's causing the infection. Almost all sinus infections are caused by viruses, which don't respond to antibiotics. Your clinician may prescribe antibiotics for a sinus infection that's determined to be bacterial.

If you’ve had sinusitis symptoms (like sinus headache, facial pressure, and nasal congestion) for less than a week, it may be too early to tell what's causing the inflammation. Your clinician may then take a wait-and-see approach, recommending over-the-counter treatments during this time. If your symptoms don't improve, you might be a candidate for antibiotics.
Can I get a doctor's note through Amazon Clinic?
Doctors' notes are available at your clinician’s discretion if you choose HelloAlpha or Wheel as your provider. Other online clinics don’t offer doctors' notes at this time.
What types of visit can I have?
Video visits are available in all 50 states and D.C. Message-only visits are available in 34 states. To see your visit options, first choose your state.
Can I use my health insurance to pay for a visit and/or medication?
Amazon Clinic doesn't accept health insurance for visits at this time. You can submit a claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, but we can’t guarantee they’ll reimburse you.

If you normally use insurance to pay for your medications, you can do that with medications prescribed through Amazon Clinic. Amazon Pharmacy accepts most insurance plans. For other pharmacies, please talk with your pharmacy directly about insurance coverage. The cost of medication isn’t included in the cost of your visit.
How does Amazon Clinic protect my health information?
Amazon Clinic protects your health information by strictly following the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA governs what Amazon Clinic and your healthcare providers can do with your medical information, as well as your contact and payment information.
