Frequently asked questions

What causes genital herpes?
Genital herpes is usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), but you can also get herpes on the penis, vagina, or anus from HSV-1. This happens through oral-genital contact with someone who has oral herpes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 13% of people aged 15-49 have genital herpes. Women are almost twice as likely as men to get it. Once you're infected, the virus stays in your neurons and can be reactivated throughout your life.
How can I avoid giving genital herpes to someone else?
The most effective way to prevent the spread of genital herpes is to abstain from sexual activity. If you choose to be sexually active, make sure sexual contact includes a latex barrier like a condom or a dental dam. These precautions also reduce your risk of getting HIV, which is three times more likely to infect someone who already has HSV-2.

Your body can transmit the virus even when you're not having an outbreak. This is called "shedding." Your body sheds more virus during an outbreak, so it's best to avoid sexual contact at that time.

If your sexual partner doesn't have genital herpes, taking daily antiviral medicine can prevent giving herpes to your partner, even if you don’t have symptoms.
Is there a cure for genital herpes?
There's no cure for genital herpes, but you can treat an active infection with a short course of antiviral medication. When taken at the start of an outbreak, prescription herpes medication can reduce the severity of your symptoms, shorten your outbreak, and lower your risk of spreading the herpes simplex virus.

And if you experience more than 6 genital herpes outbreaks a year, you might be eligible for daily antiviral medication, which can help prevent herpes outbreaks.
Are there any home remedies for genital herpes?
Because recurring genital herpes outbreaks are caused by the reactivation of a virus, you can help prevent outbreaks by taking care of your immune system. Getting the recommended amounts of sleep and exercise, eating healthy food, and keeping your stress levels down can help defend your body against all kinds of illness, including HSV-2.
What genital herpes medications can I get through Amazon Clinic?
Your clinician may prescribe an oral antiviral medication like valacyclovir (Valtrex), famciclovir (Famvir), or acyclovir (Zovirax). The duration of treatment depends on whether you have an active outbreak or you want to prevent future outbreaks.

Genital herpes medications work best when taken within 3 days of symptoms starting.

Please note: This information is for general reference only. Your clinician will review your symptoms and health history to determine which (if any) genital herpes treatments are medically appropriate.
What types of visit can I have?
