What causes cold sores?

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are caused by a herpes simplex virus (usually HSV-1). Once you’re infected with the virus, it stays in your neurons and can be reactivated throughout your life. Most people with oral herpes are infected in childhood.

When is the best time to start cold sore treatment?

Antiviral cold sore medications work best when taken within 3 days of symptoms starting. When taken at the start of an outbreak, these HSV medications can reduce the severity of your symptoms, shorten your outbreak, and lower your risk of spreading cold sores.

Common cold sore medications

Your clinician will determine which (if any) herpes treatment is medically appropriate for you based on your symptoms and health history. If you're prescribed medication, pick it up at a pharmacy of your choice. Choose Amazon Pharmacy for free delivery and transparent Prime pricing. The cost of your prescribed medication may be covered by health insurance.

When taken within 72 hours of symptoms starting, antiviral medications are clinically proven to help fever blisters heal faster. These medications can also be taken long-term to suppress the herpes virus in people with more than 5 cold sore outbreaks a year.

Frequently asked questions
Is this treatment right for me?
This treatment may be right for you if:
• You’ve been diagnosed with oral herpes (cold sores)

• You have sores on or around your mouth or you want to prevent future outbreaks

• You have normal kidney function

• You don’t have a seizure disorder

• You’re not pregnant
Can I give herpes to someone else even if I don't have symptoms?
Yes, you can infect someone else with oral herpes or genital herpes even when you're not having symptoms like fever blisters or genital lesions. But you're more likely to spread the virus if you have active sores or scabs.
How do I prevent cold sore outbreaks?
Because recurring cold sores are caused by the reactivation of a virus, you can help prevent outbreaks by taking care of your immune system. Getting the recommended amounts of sleep and exercise, eating healthy food, and keeping your stress levels down can help defend your body against all kinds of illness, including HSV-1.

You can also help prevent cold sores by protecting yourself from too much sun exposure, and by keeping your lips moisturized when you visit the dentist. Both UV light and dental procedures can cause subtle lip damage known to reactivate HSV-1.
What types of visit can I have?
Video visits are available in all 50 states and D.C. Message-only visits are available in 34 states. To see your visit options, first choose your state.
Can I use my health insurance to pay for a visit and/or medication?
Amazon Clinic doesn't accept health insurance for visits at this time. You can submit a claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, but we can’t guarantee they’ll reimburse you.

If you normally use insurance to pay for your medications, you can do that with medications prescribed through Amazon Clinic. Amazon Pharmacy accepts most insurance plans. For other pharmacies, please talk with your pharmacy directly about insurance coverage. The cost of medication isn’t included in the cost of your visit.
How does Amazon Clinic protect my health information?
Amazon Clinic protects your health information by strictly following the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA governs what Amazon Clinic and your healthcare providers can do with your medical information, as well as your contact and payment information. Amazon Clinic doesn’t and will never sell your personal information. Learn more on our privacy page.
