Frequently asked questions

What dandruff treatments can I get through Amazon Clinic?
To treat and prevent dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp), your clinician may prescribe a medicated antifungal shampoo like ketoconazole 2% or ciclopirox (Loprox) 1%. Ciclopirox can also be prescribed as a gel or foam in a .77% concentration.

In some cases of dandruff, a clinician may prescribe a corticosteroid treatment like clobetasol shampoo for short-term use.

Please note: This information is for general reference only. Your clinician will review your symptoms and health history to determine which (if any) dandruff treatments are medically appropriate.
What's the difference between prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) dry scalp treatments?
Many OTC dry scalp treatments contain active ingredients that can help control mild dandruff.
• Coal tar (Neutrogena T-Gel)
• Ketoconazole 1% (Nizoral)
• Selenium sulfide (Selsun Blue, Selsun Blue Medicated, Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength)
• Sulfur (Sulfur8 Medicated)
• Zinc pyrithione (Head & Shoulders, Zincon)
But for moderate to severe dandruff, clinicians recommend stronger antifungal medications that can help control more stubborn symptoms and prevent relapse when used regularly.

How do you know where your dandruff is on the spectrum of mild to severe dermatitis?
Mild dandruff: Skin flaking and shedding without inflammation
Moderate to severe dandruff: Skin scaling, inflammation, and itching
What causes dandruff?
Among other factors, dandruff is caused by sebaceous gland activity and opportunistic fungi called Malassezia. These fungi tend to colonize areas of skin that are high in oil (sebum), like the scalp, face, and upper body. Anti-dandruff shampoos like Nizoral work by preventing these fungi from growing.

There's no cure for dandruff, but it's very treatable, and its symptoms tend to improve in warmer months.
What types of visit can I have?
Video visits are available in all 50 states and D.C. Message-only visits are available in 34 states. To see your visit options, first choose your state.
Can I use my health insurance to pay for a visit and/or medication?
Amazon Clinic doesn't accept health insurance for visits at this time. You can submit a claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, but we can’t guarantee they’ll reimburse you.

If you normally use insurance to pay for your medications, you can do that with medications prescribed through Amazon Clinic. Amazon Pharmacy accepts most insurance plans. For other pharmacies, please talk with your pharmacy directly about insurance coverage. The cost of medication isn’t included in the cost of your visit.
How does Amazon Clinic protect my health information?

HIPAA governs what Amazon Clinic and your healthcare providers can do with your medical information, as well as your contact and payment information. Amazon Clinic doesn’t and will never sell your personal information. Learn more on our privacy page.
